The Nigerian Consulate-General in Johannesburg has raised concerns over the deaths of three Nigerian nationals in separate incidents in South Africa within four days.

The Consulate said the victims were killed between September 18 and 21, 2026, prompting the diplomatic mission to call for thorough investigations and justice for the deceased.

The victims were identified as Kenechukwu Christopher Igwemmadu, Olaniyi Olaleye Olatunde and Christian Hillary Nnaemeka.

According to the Consulate, Igwemmadu died on September 18 after allegedly jumping from a building at Kenlin Court on Douglas Street, Bloemfontein, while attempting to escape what the mission described as police harassment and brutality.

On September 20, Olatunde, a security guard at Spanata Bar and Grills Night Club in Mamelodi East, Pretoria, was reportedly shot following an altercation with a South African customer. He was taken to Mamelodi Hospital but died from his injuries on September 21.

The third victim, Nnaemeka, reportedly died following an encounter with South African politician and investigative content creator Xolani Khumalo and members of his Sizok’thola team in Primrose, Ekurhuleni.

The Consulate alleged that Nnaemeka was assaulted during the encounter before attempting to escape. He reportedly collapsed and was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The allegations surrounding the deaths remain subject to investigation, and the Consulate has called on South African authorities to establish the circumstances of each incident and prosecute anyone found responsible.

The Nigerian mission also urged Nigerians living in South Africa to remain calm, law-abiding and security-conscious while diplomatic efforts continue to ensure the protection and fair treatment of Nigerian nationals.

The latest incidents have renewed concerns about the safety of Nigerians in South Africa and the need for authorities to thoroughly investigate cases involving the deaths of Nigerian nationals.
