Nigeria’s Super Eagles began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a 2–1 comeback victory over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday.

The visitors stunned the home crowd by taking the lead in the 16th minute, with Ehsan Kari finding the net to put Madagascar 1–0 ahead. Nigeria struggled to turn their possession into clear-cut opportunities as the Barea defended resolutely.

Just when the first half appeared to be heading badly for the Super Eagles, George Ilenikhena came to the rescue. The debutant calmly converted Alex Iwobi’s pass in first-half stoppage time to level the score at 1–1.

Nigeria returned from the break with greater urgency, but Madagascar continued to threaten on the counter. Coach Eric Chelle then introduced Moses Usor, and the substitute wasted little time making his mark.

In the 65th minute, Usor produced a brilliant individual effort, carrying the ball from Nigeria’s half before beating defenders and firing past the Madagascar goalkeeper to complete the comeback.

The two debutants therefore provided both of Nigeria’s goals on a night when the Super Eagles had to fight their way back after conceding first.

The victory gives Nigeria three points from their opening Group L fixture, while Guinea-Bissau also have three points. Nigeria will next travel to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29.

For all the pre-match talk about pressure and expectations, Nigeria ultimately got the job done—but the Super Eagles certainly made their supporters sweat before the debutants came to the rescue.
