Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have rescued 41 travellers who were reportedly targeted for abduction after their commercial vehicle broke down along a highway in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The travellers were on their way from Senegal to Kano State when the vehicle developed a mechanical fault, leaving them stranded along the highway. According to the military, armed bandits took advantage of the situation and attempted to move the passengers into the surrounding area.
Acting on actionable intelligence, troops quickly mobilised to the location and engaged the armed group. The military said the intervention forced the attackers to abandon the travellers and flee into nearby farmlands.
All 41 travellers were rescued unharmed. They comprised 24 males, 10 females and seven children. The rescued passengers are currently receiving necessary support and are expected to be reunited with their families and relevant transit authorities.
The military said troops have maintained an active presence in the area as efforts continue to protect travellers along the route and track the fleeing suspects.
The incident comes amid continued military operations by Operation FANSAN YAMMA across parts of the North-West to disrupt banditry and protect communities and road users.
