The Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has signed the new Electric Power Sector Amendment Law, giving the state greater control over electricity infrastructure and introducing new measures to strengthen regulation of the power sector.

The new law grants Ondo State control over regional power infrastructure within its jurisdiction, while establishing a framework for the effective management and development of electricity assets.

The legislation also creates the Equipment Standards and Competence Certification Agency, which will be responsible for regulating electrical equipment standards, professional competence and safety within the state.

A key provision of the law is the mandatory metering of electricity consumers, aimed at promoting accurate billing, improving transparency and reducing disputes between electricity providers and consumers.

The amendment is also expected to create a more favourable environment for private-sector participation, particularly investments in renewable energy and other electricity-generation projects.

Governor Aiyedatiwa said the legislation would strengthen the state’s electricity sector and support efforts to expand reliable power supply across Ondo State.

The move positions Ondo among Nigerian states taking advantage of the decentralisation of the electricity sector to develop state-level power solutions and attract private investment.
