A Kano-based Nigerian tailor, Abdulkadir Hassanul Basari, has commenced a 120-hour non-stop sewing marathon in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest sewing marathon.
Basari began the challenge on Wednesday at the sports complex of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria in Kano, with the exercise expected to conclude on Monday night, according to a report by TheStar published on October 11, 2026.
The attempt is aimed at surpassing the existing record for the longest sewing marathon and securing international recognition for the Nigerian fashion industry.
If successful, Basari could join a growing number of Nigerians pursuing Guinness World Records through endurance-based challenges and creative accomplishments.
The existing published record stands at 106 hours, 55 minutes and 20 seconds, achieved by Nigerian fashion designer Oluwaseun Kuforiji in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, between January 22 and 26, 2025.
Kuforiji’s achievement was officially recognised by Guinness World Records in March 2025, making him the record holder in the category.
Basari’s 120-hour target would exceed the existing benchmark if he completes the required duration and his performance satisfies Guinness World Records’ verification requirements.
However, completing the marathon alone would not automatically guarantee official recognition, as the organisation requires record attempts to meet its applicable guidelines and evidence standards.
Further details about Basari’s progress, the number of garments produced and the eventual outcome of his attempt are awaited.
