Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the Federal Government’s approach to fuel costs, accusing him of adopting his production subsidy proposal without retaining the key elements needed to make it effective.
In a statement circulating on social media, Atiku addressed Tinubu directly, recalling that he had been criticised for proposing targeted support to ease the burden of fuel costs on Nigerians.
“Bola, when I proposed targeted support to ease fuel costs, you called me ignorant of economic policy,” Atiku was quoted as saying.
He likened Tinubu to a student who copied a classmate’s answers during an examination but failed to understand the work, arguing that the President had borrowed his proposal without implementing it properly.
Atiku further alleged that Tinubu had stripped away the essential component of his production subsidy proposal and instead offered Nigerians what he described as a 30-day discount.
“You copied my production subsidy proposal, nothing wrong about that, you stripped away the part that makes it work and handed Nigerians a 30-day discount,” the statement read.
He concluded with a rhetorical question emphasising the importance of education, saying, “You see why it is good to go to school?”
The alleged remarks have drawn attention to the debate over fuel pricing, subsidy policies and the effectiveness of government measures to cushion the economic impact on Nigerians.
