The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has described President Bola Tinubu’s “Emilokan” political slogan as an expression of despotism and a belief in a divine right to rule.

Aregbesola made the remark while explaining his interpretation of the phrase, which gained prominence in Nigerian politics during Tinubu’s 2023 presidential campaign.

According to the ADC National Secretary, “Emilokan” goes beyond the ordinary political expression of “it is my turn,” arguing that it could imply an inherent or God-given entitlement to control a territory and its people.

He described such a mindset as “despotism”, suggesting that political power should not be treated as the exclusive entitlement of an individual.

The phrase “Emilokan” became widely associated with Tinubu following his 2022 speech in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during which he declared that it was his turn to lead Nigeria after years of supporting other political leaders, including former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Aregbesola and Tinubu have a long-standing political history dating back to their years in Lagos politics. Aregbesola later served as governor of Osun State and subsequently as Minister of Interior under the Buhari administration.

However, Aregbesola is now a leading figure in the opposition ADC, where he serves as National Secretary. The ADC has positioned itself as a major opposition platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His latest comments are expected to fuel further political debate over the concentration of power, political succession and the meaning of entitlement in Nigeria’s democratic system.
