OSOGBO, Osun State — No fewer than 30 residents have been arrested by the Osun State Amotekun Corps during an enforcement operation in Osogbo and its environs.
The arrests were made in the early hours of Tuesday, October 6, 2026, as operatives of the Osun Amotekun Corps, in collaboration with environmental sanitation authorities, commenced enforcement activities across parts of the state capital.
The operation is part of efforts by the Osun State Government to address environmental sanitation violations, particularly the dumping of refuse on roads, streets and drainage channels.
According to the authorities, waste dumped in unauthorised locations can obstruct drainage systems, contribute to flooding and create other environmental hazards.
The enforcement followed the recent constitution of an Environmental Sanitation Task Force by the Osun State Government under the leadership of Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke.
Following their arrest, the affected residents were handed over to environmental sanitation officials for further investigation and appropriate action in line with relevant state laws and regulations.
Speaking with journalists in Osogbo, the Corps Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, High Chief Dr. Hon. Adekunle Isaac Omoyele, said the enforcement was necessary to curb activities capable of undermining environmental cleanliness and public safety.
Omoyele warned residents against dumping refuse on roads and inside drainage channels, particularly during the rainy season, noting that blocked drainage systems can worsen flooding and damage roads and other public infrastructure.
He said the enforcement was not intended to inconvenience law-abiding residents but to ensure compliance with the government's environmental sanitation directives.
The Corps Commander urged residents to properly package their household waste and hand it over to designated waste collectors rather than disposing of it at unauthorised locations.
He added that the Amotekun Corps would continue to support environmental sanitation officials in enforcing the government's directives and ensuring that offenders are referred to the appropriate authorities.
Omoyele appealed to residents, business owners and other stakeholders to cooperate with the government in maintaining a clean and healthy environment across Osun State.
The corps also urged residents to use approved waste disposal channels and avoid activities that could block drainage systems or compromise public infrastructure.
