Gunmen suspected to be thugs on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, opened fire on the convoy of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, shortly after he received his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osogbo.

The incident occurred outside the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, where Governor Adeleke had gone to present his Certificate of Return to the monarch and receive his prayers following his re-election.

According to reports, the assailants reportedly arrived in an unregistered Toyota Sienna minibus, damaged the palace gate and opened fire as the governor was preparing to leave the premises.

Security operatives attached to the governor’s convoy immediately responded to the attack, resulting in an exchange of gunfire that reportedly lasted between 12 and 15 minutes before the attackers fled the scene.

The incident occurred shortly after 3:15 p.m. as Governor Adeleke’s convoy was moving towards Ita Olokan and the Osogbo Central Mosque.

The gunfire triggered panic in the area, with traders and shop owners around Ita Olokan and the Osogbo-Ilesa Road reportedly fleeing their businesses and shutting their shops temporarily.

The Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, confirmed the attack, saying security operatives successfully repelled the attackers.

Alimi said no person was injured or killed in the incident.

The attack occurred hours after Governor Adeleke formally received his Certificate of Return from INEC, following his victory in the August 15, 2026 Osun State governorship election.

Security authorities are expected to investigate the incident and identify those responsible for the attack.
